“My advice is to approach every conversation with the intention of building a long-lasting relationship. Even if you don’t think that connection is of benefit to you now, you never know when you may be able to reconnect with them for your benefit, or theirs.”
In this interview, Matthew Caiola, a catalyst in the successes of some of the biggest names in business, talks about the highlights of his professional journey and his current stint as the co-CEO of 5WPR. The youngest CEO of a Top 10 PR agency in the US, Matt credits his team for his effective leadership and management. Read on to know from him the benefits of aligning corporate communications & digital marketing and forming meaningful connections, his take on AI, and how HBO’s Succession has captivated him like most of us.
Matt, can you tell us about your professional background and your current role at 5W Public Relations.
After receiving my degree in public relations from Iona College in 2005, I began my career as an Account Executive at Aerotek and then later at Avalanche Strategic Communications where I specialized in clean-tech, aviation, and consumer client areas. I joined 5WPR in 2009 and grew my career, working my way up to leadership positions, overseeing 5W’s Corporate, Technology, and later Digital practice areas. In February 2022, I was promoted to 5WPR Co-CEO, making me the youngest CEO of a Top 10 PR agency in the US. In this position, I continue to oversee the Corporate, Technology, and Digital divisions in addition to assisting in the day-to-day operation decisions on behalf of the agency.
What sets 5WPR apart from other companies in the same industry?
5W is an agency built to grow and adapt alongside our clients and the communications industry as a whole. We’re named after the five Ws of journalism: who, what, where, when and why. This central vision allows us to build and execute campaigns and strategies unique to every client and their needs, resulting in work that exceeds expectations.
How do you effectively lead and manage the Corporate & Technology Communications division at 5W?
Having spent the bulk of my career at 5W, working under and alongside many of our successful leaders, I have been able to step into leadership roles myself knowing what traditionally works well for our agency, and what doesn’t. The most important tool that has led to my ability to effectively lead and manage the divisions I oversee is the incredible team of professionals I have the pleasure of working alongside. I trust their abilities and instincts implicitly, allowing me to focus my attention on big-picture growth for the divisions I oversee, as well as the agency.
Can you tell us how digital marketing strategies can be integrated with corporate communications to enhance brand messaging and reach a wider audience?
There is not a single industry that doesn’t benefit from the implementation of digital marketing. Social media, influencers, search engine optimization (SEO), and email marketing are all tactics to implement that can expand your audience base, engaging those who have heard of you, as well as introducing you to a new audience. Additionally, digital marketing helps to ensure your audiences are encountering consistent and unified messaging, no matter the touchpoint or channel they’re engaging. Anytime they come across your company online, through your website, a social post, or an advertisement, they will be presented with a piece of a larger campaign meant to move them from a passive viewer to an active audience.

What are the key benefits of aligning corporate communications and digital marketing efforts in today’s business landscape?
Aligning corporate communications and digital marketing efforts in today’s business ensures you’re putting your best efforts into reaching your audience and providing potential customers and audiences with an experience that provides you the opportunity to convert views and engagements to sales.
How do you approach networking and building professional relationships? Do you have any tips for our readers on how to make meaningful connections in their industries?
Networking is key to building personal and professional confidence within your industry. Business connections can later become mentors and are a resource for sharing experiences and receiving advice. My advice is to approach every conversation with the intention of building a long-lasting relationship. Even if you don’t think that connection is of benefit to you now, you never know when you may be able to reconnect with them for your benefit, or theirs.
Additionally, join leadership organizations for your industry, especially local chapters. These are not only great opportunities to learn about events where you can network, but they often provide educational opportunities like classes and webinars you can attend to build your industry knowledge, setting you up for success.
What is the biggest problem you or your team are solving this year?
We work across many industries, and each presents us with unique challenges that are specific to them. However, one common conversation taking place across all these industries is the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI). While we don’t consider AI a problem, it’s a modern challenge impacting everyone because there’s still so much unknown about the technology. Some of the questions we’re actively looking to answer include ‘When and where can we implement AI to utilize the technologies to our advantage?’, and ‘Where can implementing these technologies backfire and result in shortcomings?’ Some of our client partners are eager to engage with AI, while others are more skeptical about the content being created.
Is there anything that you’re currently watching, or any favorite books, that you’d recommend?
I’m currently reading “Outlive” by Peter Attia. It provides a scientific look into living better and longer—truly a life-changing read. Other than reading, like many, I have been drawn to “Succession” on HBO. Especially working in an industry that engages with media, and working in Manhattan, it’s drawn me in.
Thanks, Matt!
