Alphabet-owned Google announced days after it rolled out the AI Overviews feature that they will initiate testing search and shopping ads in their AI-generated answers in the US. Based on the search query’s relevance and information, the ads will appear in the sponsored section with the AI overview. The search engine has been exploring opportunities to expand its dominance beyond legacy search advertising to emerging generative AI tech trends.
The goal of integrating AI into its search engine is to boost its ad revenues, which is its main source of revenue.
Google witnessed a 13% rise in its advertising sales, reaching $61.7 billion in the first quarter of this fiscal year.
The organization stated that they would continue exploring, testing, and adapting new ad formats after the feedback from advertisers.
