UpCity Survey Results: 57% Of Digital Marketing Entrepreneurs Started A Business Due To COVID-19
Whether it was a job loss, furlough, or a desire to join the Great Resignation, digital marketing entrepreneurs share their experience of launching their own businesses during a pandemic.

UpCity, in conjunction with Pollfish, has released a survey assessing digital marketing experts’ journeys of starting and running their own digital marketing-focused agencies amidst the pandemic.
The Digital Marketing Entrepreneurs Post-Covid survey gathers insight from 600 digital marketing agency owners throughout the United States to take a deeper look at motives for launching their own business, digital marketing training, business launches, as well as these new entrepreneurs’ agency offerings and operations.
Statistical highlights include:
- 34% of respondents received a digital marketing certification before starting their business.
- 42% of respondents started their digital marketing business on the side while working full-time for an employer.
- 60% of digital marketing entrepreneurs initially operated their businesses as one-person freelancers and/or consultants.
- 57% of respondents have a business partner and classify themselves as a co-founder.
- 39% of respondents originally serviced small businesses as their primary client type.
Heidi Sullivan, SVP of Product & Marketing at UpCity, says that this is another sign that the pandemic disrupted so much that people can no longer live their lives by the traditional playbook.
“For many of our respondents, the decision to start their own business was less a decision than a forced necessity to survive layoffs and job losses to keep a roof over their heads, as there were few jobs in a highly-competitive market in the early days of the pandemic,” Sullivan said. “We soon saw that change and witnessed the reverse occur. The pandemic forced many to prioritize what truly mattered to them people refused to settle for outdated office policies and start their own businesses so they could make their own rules.”
Sullivan continued. “No matter your reasoning, as a small business ourselves, we understand that no one can do it alone and that’s why we’re happy to provide resources that can help our newer entrepreneurs entering the digital marketing sphere.”
