Commvault Unveils Conversational AI to Simplify Enterprise Cyber Resilience

Commvault, a global leader in cyber resilience and data protection for hybrid cloud environments, announced a major advancement in enterprise data management: conversation is now the new interface for resilience.

This innovation is powered by Commvault’s Model Context Protocol (MCP) server, a policy-based connector that securely bridges enterprise systems with leading generative AI (GenAI) assistants such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT Enterprise and Anthropic’s Claude. With this capability, users can interact with Commvault Cloud using natural language to configure, manage, and execute resilience workflows – from setup and monitoring to corrective actions – all within enterprise security and compliance frameworks.

Bringing Human Simplicity to Cyber Resilience

With this breakthrough, Commvault is transforming how organizations manage data protection by introducing human-level simplicity to complex operations. Instead of navigating dashboards and commands, users can now communicate naturally with Commvault Cloud – just as they would with a trusted colleague – safely, securely, and within enterprise policy guardrails.

This conversational model opens the door to faster, safer automation across a wide range of resilience activities. From protecting workloads in SaaS and cloud environments to managing hybrid infrastructure, users can simply ask questions or issue instructions – and the system responds intelligently.

A typical exchange between a user and a GenAI assistant connected through Commvault’s MCP server might look like this:

User: “Is my instance of Docusign backed up?”
GenAI Response: “You don’t have a Docusign backup set up yet. Would you like me to set that up so that you have the necessary configuration in place?”
User: “Yes.”
GenAI Response: “Perfect, I’ll set that up for you now,” followed by relevant details such as a job ID and additional options like, “Would you like me to back this up now and set up the backups on a repeatable schedule?”

Unlike traditional chat interfaces, Commvault’s conversational AI doesn’t just respond — it acts. The system executes authorized tasks like configuring backups, monitoring performance, or initiating recovery, all in compliance with enterprise policy and security standards.

A Unified Experience Across Workloads

This same conversational experience extends across all workloads protected by Commvault Cloud, not just individual applications. Whether through text or voice, teams can consistently manage protection and recovery at scale with a simple, intuitive interface.

For a demonstration of how this works in practice, Commvault has released a short demo and accompanying blog post highlighting the technology in action.

“With this kind of AI simplicity, we can spend less time managing routine backup jobs and more time thinking about how to strengthen our resilience strategy,” said Christopher N. Colla, Vice President of Information Technology & CIO at B&G Foods. “It’s so easy to ask our AI assistant to handle a backup or check a recovery status — it’s the same way we ask it to write an email or summarize a report. Now, that same simplicity applies to keeping our data safe.”

“Commvault’s conversational AI is a pragmatic application of GenAI for data protection,” said Johnny Yu, Research Manager, IDC. “Its focus isn’t AI autonomy but rather optimizing the interface between the data protection tool and the human user. That said, it does lay the groundwork for AI autonomy by creating traceability and accountability for every AI action.”

“At Commvault, we’re moving beyond conversational interfaces to enable agentic resilience – where AI can act on behalf of teams, safely and transparently,” said Pranay Ahlawat, Chief Technology and AI Officer at Commvault. “By adopting the Model Context Protocol, we’re giving enterprises the foundation to automate recovery and protection workflows within the guardrails of the NIST Risk Management Framework – auditable, policy-driven, and role-based access controlled. This is how we bring simplicity and trust together in the age of AI operations.”

Setting a New Benchmark for AI-Driven Data Protection

By merging conversational AI with trusted enterprise data protection, Commvault is redefining what operational resilience looks like in the era of AI-powered automation. The introduction of the MCP server marks a pivotal step toward agentic resilience, where AI doesn’t just assist — it acts securely, transparently, and within defined governance boundaries.
