Mili Kapoor has joined OpenAI as Consumer Marketing Lead in India, taking on the role as the AI company expands its focus on consumer engagement in the market.
Based in Delhi, Kapoor joins OpenAI from Apple, where she most recently served as Product Marketing Lead for iPad. She brings nearly two decades of experience across consumer marketing, brand strategy and product marketing, with previous leadership roles at Philips, Meta, Nestlé, Pernod Ricard and PepsiCo.
The appointment comes at an important point for AI marketing. As generative AI tools move further into everyday use, the challenge for companies is shifting from building awareness to helping consumers understand where these products fit into their daily lives.
For marketers, this creates a different kind of task. AI products can be powerful, but they can also be difficult to explain. Consumer marketing will increasingly need to translate technical capabilities into clear, relevant use cases while addressing questions around trust, value and responsible adoption.

India adds another layer to this challenge. The market brings a large and diverse digital audience, different levels of AI familiarity and a growing appetite for new technology. Building meaningful consumer engagement will require more than global messaging. It will depend on understanding how people actually use AI across work, education, creativity and everyday tasks.
Kapoor’s appointment reflects the growing importance of experienced consumer marketing leadership as AI companies move closer to mainstream audiences. Her background across technology and consumer brands could be particularly relevant as OpenAI looks to connect its products with a broader range of users in India.
