Grammarly Introduces Grammarly Authorship to Enhance Transparency in Writing Assignments for the AI Era

On 14th August 2024, Grammarly, the leading AI company dedicated to enhancing communication for over 30 million individuals, 70,000 teams, and 3,000 educational institutions, announced the upcoming launch of Grammarly Authorship. This new tool, set to debut in beta for Google Docs in September 2024, will also be available for Microsoft Word and Pages by the end of 2024.

Grammarly Authorship is designed to differentiate between human-generated content, AI-generated text, and AI-edited material within documents. Unlike existing AI detection tools that rely solely on algorithms, Authorship offers a comprehensive analysis across 500,000 apps and websites. It provides detailed insights into each part of a document, including sections typed manually, pasted from other sources, or created with AI.

Jenny Maxwell, Head of Grammarly for Education, highlighted the tool’s relevance, stating, “As the school year starts, many institutions still lack clear AI policies. With half of individuals aged 14–22 reporting they have used generative AI, the need for effective tools is critical. Authorship aims to address this gap by facilitating transparent discussions about AI’s role in education. It offers students a straightforward way to demonstrate their interaction with AI tools, helping them adhere to academic integrity standards and prepare for an AI-enhanced workplace.”

Grammarly Authorship automatically categorizes text in a document into various types: human-typed, AI-generated, AI-modified, AI-edited, pasted, or spell-checked. Students can access several features through Authorship:

  • Authorship analytics provides a detailed breakdown of the text categories within the document and offers overall document metrics such as total writing time and active writing sessions.
  • The authorship report presents the full text of the assignment, color-coded to indicate whether it was human-written, AI-generated, AI-modified, AI-edited, or pasted.
  • Authoring replay delivers a complete playback of text appearance in the document, with options to analyze specific points where text was added.

Before submission, Grammarly Authorship allows students to ensure their work aligns with instructor guidelines and provides objective support if flagged for plagiarism. By early 2025, the tool will also encourage proper citation of external sources, promoting greater transparency and accuracy.

Since its inception in 2009, Grammarly has leveraged AI to support academic excellence. Authorship is the latest addition to Grammarly’s suite of tools designed to tackle academic integrity challenges in the digital era, following the introduction of Grammarly Originality. This feature integrates plagiarism detection with advanced AI capabilities, offering clear insights and guidance on interpreting results.

Through its array of writing suggestions, generative AI features, citation tools, and now authorship and originality, Grammarly reaffirms its commitment to empowering students to use AI responsibly and effectively.
